I thought I should say on this day of celebration of the power of the working class (see the May Day article in Wikipedia), that is a beautiful thing to see the hundreds of thousands of Latinos taking to the streets to remind America how important their contribution is.
And of course, this is also day to remember our glorious Oklahoma Socialist history (including our original state flag — the now banned Red Flag)
Mathew, I have been thinking and thinking about all of this.
I still have no clear idea what is going on: Si, se what? The news media doesn’t really seem to help.
It sounds to me like everyone involved is simply trying to take advantage of someone else, either for jobs, money, votes, or power.
What specifically do the legal immigrants want, what do the illegal immigrants want, and what is reasonable?
“Si, se puede” is spanish for “Yes, we can.” It was the slogan of the United Farm Workers union campaign back in the day (more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%AD_se_puede )
Well I think maybe I would listen to the immigrants instead of the media. When I was at the rally a few weeks back at the OKC state capitol, what I heard was that folks wanted to work and not be seperated from their families, and they wanted to contribute to the community and nation that they are now living in. They want to pay their taxes and they want to have a say in how those taxes are spent (sounds a lot like the Revolutionary War slogan of “No taxation without representation.”
And most want to preserve their culture and language for future generations, but they also want to learn English and embrace the culture of this nation as well.
